Senate Passes Bill Allowing Concealed Carry Of Guns In Restaurants

Right now it’s illegal to carry a concealed weapon into an Ohio restaurant, but that could soon change.

“My initial reaction is it opens up a can of worms,” said Stewart Miller, a restaurant general manager in the Arena District. “This is going to be just one more thing we have to manage.”

Miller also said he’s frustrated that lawmakers are changing the law without listening to the businesses it will affect, ONN’s Jim Heath reported on Thursday.

“Who did they talk to to start thinking this is something we should be spending time on?” Miller said. “Who did they listen to that said that’s probably a good idea?”

Others said it is time for the law to change.

“If you look at all the surrounding states of Ohio none of them restrict carry in a car and none of them restrict carry in a restaurant. So it’s a change that is well past due,” said Ken Hanson, spokesman for the Buckeye Firearms Association.

Hanson has been lobbying for the bill for more than a year. It has the strong support of the National Rifle Association and Ohioans for Concealed Carry.

Ohio House OKs Collective Bargaining Limits

Labor stronghold Ohio assumed center stage Wednesday in the battle over collective bargaining rights for public workers as the state Legislature was poised to send to the governor a bill that was in some ways tougher than that seen in Wisconsin.

The measure awaited likely passage in the Republican-controlled state Senate on Wednesday evening after it earlier cleared the GOP-led House on a 53-44 vote.

Chants of “Shame on you!” quickly broke out from onlookers in the House balcony after the vote there.

About 150 protesters then filtered into the Senate chamber, singing “We shall not be moved” and shouting “Power to the people!”

Unlike Wisconsin’s measure, the Ohio legislation would extend union restrictions to police officers and firefighters.

Ohio AFL-CIO Says it Has Not Discussed a Compromise on SB5

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Ohio AFL-CIO President Tim Burga says the union “has never entered into any series of meetings or negotiations on Senate Bill 5,” the controversial collective bargaining law.

Burga issued a statement in response to a Columbus Dispatch article that named him as a union leader who in June participated with representatives of Gov. John Kasich in discussions to negotiate a compromise that would end union-led efforts to repeal the law this fall.

Burga called that report “erroneous.”
